Tea and coffee is available during our session.

Therapy can be very daunting - whether you had successful therapy that ran its course, bad therapy where you felt not listened to or perhaps even hurt, or if you have never had any therapy before, starting with someone new can be very difficult and anxiety provoking. I created this section to tell you a little bit about what you might expect from our sessions and I hope this helps to put your mind at ease.

If you are not sure whether therapy is for you, you can schedule in a free 15-minute phone conversation where I could answer some of your questions, and it gives you an opportunity to think whether this is something you would like to go ahead with.

A little bit about the therapy

Should you decide to go ahead, we will book you in for your assessment. Assessments are carried out by myself, and are usually done over the phone, lasting around 30 minutes. The purpose of the assessment is to give an opportunity for me to learn more about your presenting issues. Here, we will also talk about timings, availability and agree when the therapy is going to start.

Our first therapy session (and all subsequent sessions) will last 50 minutes. Here, we will have a longer chat about you, your struggles, and about how I can best help you. We will begin to think about your therapeutic goals, and begin to plan how this could be achieved. This is something called case formulation and you will be an active part of this, by deciding what works and does not work for you, and deciding what you want your therapeutic goals to look like.

The first session is usually very relaxed, more of a chat rather than a deep, exploratory session – in my experience, it is important to start slow and build the trust and working relationship, before any deeper work takes place. This is so we could see what your resilience is like when it comes to talking about the things that perhaps you have not spoken about in a very long time, or have not told anyone else before. I appreciate I need to earn your trust, and patience is the key – we are trying to build a foundation, a secure base for you, where you feel free and able to be open to talk about yourself.

After that, we embark on your therapeutic journey together and here it looks very varied from person to person, but just know that we will continue to review it, we will recognize your achievements together and we will work on anything else that you feel needs to be worked on.

I am looking forward to going on this journey with you.
